Seem to be under the impression that most products lose effectiveness after a while? Gradually, the face cream that used to leave skin fresh and supple does not seem to work as well? Are blemishes coming back with a vengeance? Does skin get used to facial treatments after a while and stop reacting to its benefits anymore?

The answer is yes, however the reason might not be the product itself but rather the way the skin care products are handled after being brought home.

Skin care products are manufactured and packaged in a sterile environment. Once opened the products are exposed to contaminants and become a breeding ground for germs. These germs and bacteria not only breakdown the effectiveness of the product but are also transferred to the skin causing clogged pores, acne, blackheads and other skin problems.

Preserve the effectiveness of facial care products with proper storage procedures and by developing hygiene habits. The following rules are an easy way to get started.

Keep creams and lotions away from sink, toothbrushes, hairbrushes, toilets, or anything that might cause cross-contamination. Bathrooms have the most germs of any place in the home protect products by storing in a cool dry place, preferably in a drawer or box.

Close jars and bottles tightly immediately after extracting the desired amount. Leaving containers open until completing the skin care routine allow for contamination from splashes of water and make-up residue. Another reason to close containers immediately is that oxygen and light may contribute to the breakdown of ingredients.

Do not use fingers to dip into the cold cream or acne products to avoid introducing bacteria into it. Use a disposable spatula, inexpensive ice cream sticks are ideal and available in any supermarket.

Keep hair away from face by wrapping a towel or headband before cleansing to keep hair products, such as gels and mousses, away from the skin. In addition, hair carries dirt, bacteria, and environmental pollutants.

Wash hands thoroughly before handling the products or touching skin. Hand washing is an important step to avoid contaminating face creams and lotions to prevent the transfer of germs onto the skin.

After removing all traces of make-up, apply toner with a cotton pad. Inspect for any make-up residual, the pad should be clean if not modify the cleansing procedure. Allow toner to dry before applying another product in order to allow pores to close.

If using washcloths, thoroughly rinse and dry after every use. Use a fresh washcloth each time by stocking a supply that can be thrown in the washer. Washcloths are inexpensive and usually sold in packs of ten.

Keep separate face and hand towels. Wash and dry towels often specially when shared by others such as children and guests. Germs thrive in moisture and towels provide just the right environment.

With practice, these simple measures will become routine providing renewed effectiveness of skin care products and improved skin.
